Nadera Shalhoub-Kevorkian, a longtime Palestinian activist and law professor, will give a talk about present-day conditions for Palestinians living in Occupied East Jerusalem at an Oct. 8 event at the Parish of St. Clement, 1515 Wilder Ave.
The event, which runs from 6 to 8:30 p.m., is open to the public and will include a free dinner and an 18-minute film about the 1917 Balfour Declaration.
The event is funded by
St. Clement’s and Sabeel, an ecumenical organization centered in the Episcopal Church of Jerusalem. Co-sponsors are the University of Hawaii at Manoa’s departments of American Studies, English, Ethnic Studies, Political Science and Women’s Studies; Jewish Voice for Peace Hawaii; World Can’t Wait, Revolution Books Hawaii; Women’s Voices Women Speak; UH Students and Faculty for Justice in Palestine; and the Hawaii Coalition for Justice in Palestine.
Shalhoub-Kevorkian, a law professor at Hebrew University of Jerusalem, will speak about conditions for Palestinians living in Occupied East Jerusalem, and how those conditions are part of an ongoing history of settler colonialism. She is an anti-violence Palestinian feminist activist and the director of the Gender Studies Program at Mada al-Carmel, the Arab Center for Applied Social Research in Haifa. In 2015, she was one of Harvard Law School’s Women Inspiring Change honorees.
Parking is available at the church and at Punahou School, the Christian Science Church at 1508 Punahou St., and the Lutheran Church of Honolulu at 1730 Punahou St. An attendant at St. Clement’s will provide parking maps.
