Woman, 81, run over in parking lot on Kapahulu

An 81-year-old woman was in critical condition today after a driver ran over her in a bank parking lot on Kapahulu Avenue.

Honolulu police Traffic Division Capt. Stason Tanaka said the driver, a woman in her 70s, apparently didn’t see the victim, who was walking with a friend in the parking lot towards Diamond Head. The driver was making a left turn in the parking lot and apparently slowed for the victim’s friend to walk past her car, but then ran over the victim who was walking behind the friend.

The driver stopped, and the victim was pinned behind the left front wheel.

Firefighters jacked up the car and freed the woman, who was taken to the Queen’s Medical Center in critical condition.

The collision occurred in the parking lot of the First Hawaiian Bank near Waikiki-Kapahulu Public Library at about 12:50 p.m.

Tanaka said the driver was not injured. Police opened a negligent injury investigation.

parking lots can be crowded, confusing and very dangerous. I hope she recovers.

Walking about in parking lots can be very dangerous. You very commonly see people sitting in their cars talking on their phones or texting or doing I do not know what.
Bottom line is that they are preoccupied and not paying attention. They then decide to leave without checking to see if anyone is walking in back of their parked vehicle and
this is why this kind of accident happens. The elderly are often not paying attention either so it is a perfect storm for this kind of accident to happen.

That’s why it’s safer to reverse into a parking stall. When you pass the stall to back into it you can see if someone is there and when you are ready to leave you are already looking forward.

Although it makes sense reversing may be safer since you activate you reverse lights. Folks who opt to reverse into a parking stall will not have their headlights on when in motion unless you have decent running lights. Bottom line…people in a “rush” + inattentive driving…either on their phones talking or texting away…all too common. Heavy fines should be on the City Council agenda. By the way, I believe a decent percentage have a difficult time rotating their neck (flexion) or upper torso (psoas muscle group)…another subject matter…to check out what’s in your blind spot and in back.

Some folks drive in a parking lot like it’s a regular city street, forgetting that people will be walking out from between cars or children get away from parents and run out from the car. Dangerous! I see it all the time at Stan Sheriff Center.

No excuse. Can’t take anything for granted.

Golden rule: Pedestrians need to maintain eye-to-eye contact with the driver. If the driver doesn’t look at you, stop and let the car pass. Err on the side of caution.

Not only while crossing the streets, but it’s hazardous for pedestrians to walk on sidewalks & in parking lots. Both drivers & pedestrians have to be more aware of their surroundings & not only focus on what is in front of them.

  7. kuasol1 says:

Pedestrians assume that they have the right-of-way at their peril. I always look both ways whenever I am walking in a street or area where cars, motorcycles or mopeds are operating. I see pedestrians oblivious of their surroundings every day.
