Not surprising knowing the way so many R-e*t*A+r~D=s drive through that tunnel rain or shine. Seems they find it exciting to defy the lights on signs upon entering the tunnels as well.
There seem to be a higher rate of accidents in the tunnel. Why? Some drivers don’t turn on their lights. Many speed up. But overall, the feeling one gets driving through the tunnel is hypnotic…..maybe DOT needs to look at breaking up, visually, the appearance of the sides of the tunnel. There is something going here that I don’t think highway engineers understand, but maybe some other disciplines would have some ideas.
I’ve driven in the tunnel many times and it’s fine. It’s just that people don’t know how to control their vehicle. They thnk they are better drivers than they really are.
The answer for all the accidents inside the tunnel is obvious. Hawaii is the least intelligent state in the world as this report notes.
A Washington Post analysis designed to rank states based on an “intelligence score” was not kind to Hawaii.
In fact, Hawaii was ranked 50th on the list – in other words, the “least intelligent” state.Ouch.
We’re #50!!!! We’re #50!!!

If people are getting ‘hypnotized’ by the walls of a tunnel, they need to give up their drivers license immediately. Drivers should be scanning the road and vehicles ahead of them and not even notice the tunnel walls. Drivers should look where they want to go. If they are target fixating a tunnel wall, then they will end up as a wall fixture.
Probably give up their phones too.
Consensus seems to think the tunnel walls have hypnotic effect on certain drivers. Mental idiots? Never liked tunnels and it has been my policy to get through as quick as possible. No time for idle thoughts, got out!
