All Big Island public schools, UH campuses closing
All public schools and University of Hawaii campuses on Hawaii island will shut down Wednesday ahead of stormy conditions from Hurricane Madeline.
“Closures are being made in anticipation of severe weather,” the Department of Education said in a news release this afternoon. “All other schools in other counties will remain open until further notice.”
The public schools will also be closed on Thursday.
All inter-scholastic athletic events and student activities on the Big Island also are being canceled tomorrow and Thursday.
The DOE said that while many public school campuses serve as emergency shelters, county civil defense agencies determine which schools are activated shelters.
Hawaii County has designated the following schools as activated shelters starting today at 5 p.m.:

- Kalanianaole Elementary and Intermediate
- Kau High
- Keaau High
- Kealakehe High
- Kohala High

- Mountain View Elementary

- Waikoloa Elementary
- Waimea Middle
University of Hawaii campuses on the Big Island — UH Hilo, Hawaii Community College, HCC-Palamanui, ‘Imiloa Astronomy Center, North Hawaii Education and Research Center, Hale Pohaku – Onizuka Cener for International Astronomy and food and lodging facilities, UH Manoa College of Tropical Agriculture and Human Resources facilities on Hawaii island and all UH Manoa Institute for Astronomy facilities on Hawaii island are closed Wednesday, the university said.
The state Public Charter School Commission said at least seven charter schools on the Big Island will shut down their campuses tomorrow.
Connections Public Charter School in Hilo; Hawaii Academy of Arts & Science in Pahoa; Kanu o ka Aina New Century Public Charter School in Kamuela; Kua o ka La New Century Public Charter School in Pahoa; Ka ʻUmeke Kaʻeo in Hilo; Ka‘u Learning Academy in Naalehu; and West Hawaii Explorations Academy in Kailua-Kona will be closed tomorow.
Officials said Connections and Kanu o ka ‘Aina will also be closed Thursday, while Kua o ka La will remain closed through Friday.
