Bob’s Pizzeria is a classic pizza joint on the Windward side.
“I try to be part of the neighborhood,” said owner Bob Festa. “(We’re) not just for the tourist.”

With that in mind, Festa created an intimate outdoor space for dining families. It’s a place where lucky patrons can occasionally catch Festa performing.
“I’m a magician,” he said. “I do (magic) for friends and families and customers and kids at the store. … I don’t do it for money.”
While takeout orders are welcome, there are six four-seater tables and one long table to enjoy Bob’s pies, calzones and other items fresh from the oven. Festa said he likes serving families. He doesn’t serve alcohol because that would “bring a different type of element. I don’t drink myself but people can bring their own.”
About the business: Festa moved from Boston to Oahu in 1993 and took over Boston’s North End Pizza in Kailua. In 2006 he separated from the chain and opened Bob’s Pizzeria the following year.
The restaurant makes pizzas “the right way,” he said. “The way you’re supposed to.”
For Festa that means his product is reminiscent of the food of his childhood, for which his Italian grandparents used only basic ingredients. He aims for quality, not something “loaded with grease and additives,” and uses the highest-quality flour, 100 percent mozzarella cheese (“doesn’t have all that oil”) and tomatoes that he brings in from California.
“And there’s no dairy in the dough,” Festa said. “A good, healthy product.”
The toppings, too, are simple: onions, peppers, spinach, tomatoes and fresh garlic (although he has more toppings available for people who want to design their own pies).
“I don’t do the designer toppings,” he said.
Festa takes care of the “office things and purchasing” while his daughter Lexie, who moved to Hawaii about a year ago, learns the business and runs the store.
“She has the personality for it,” Festa said, saying she is great with the customers.
What to order: About 10 types of pizza fill the case, but customers can make their own with up to five toppings. One-topping pies are $20.94. Those with five toppings are $30.15. Or, add a topping to one of the ready-made pizzas for an added cost. Additional toppings include anchovies, olives, ham, mushrooms, pepperoni, pineapple, jalapeno, pepperoncini and artichoke hearts. Pizzas are 19 inches, and a slice is a quarter of the pie.
Calzones ($7.33) are also available but sell out fast. They include spinach and garlic; ham and pepperoni; and spinach, garlic and pepperoni.
Bob’s also serves chicken wings — six pieces ($6.60) to 24 ($22.37) — plus side salads ($3.14) and drinks.
Parking: Although there are quite a few stalls in the Kailua Beach Center, the parking lot can get crowded.
