OCCC inmate dies in apparent suicide
An Oahu Community Correctional Center inmate died at a hospital in an apparent suicide.
At approximately 7 a.m. Friday, the 66-year-old inmate was transported to a hospital in serious condition due to a head injury, said Shayne Enright, spokeperson for the Honolulu Emergency Services Department. In an e-mailed statement, Toni Schwartz, spokeswoman of the Department of Public Safety, said assigned staff and facility medical staff immediately responded and Emergency Medical Services was called.
“The inmate was responsive while being transported to the hospital,” said Schwartz. At about 11 a.m., he was pronounced dead at the hospital.
Schwartz said the official cause of death is pending an autopsy by the medical examiner’s office. As standard procedure, an internal investigation as well as an investigation by law enforcement are underway.
The man’s identification is being withheld at this time pending notification of next-of-kin.
Police said there is no evidence of foul play.
