Maui police are looking for several armed men in connection with the shooting death of a man in a Kahului home early Monday morning.
Police were called to a home on Kea Street at 2:50 a.m. to investigate a report of a group of armed males threatening people at a residence, police said.
They found a man with an apparent gunshot wound in a storage room in the back of the carport, police said.
The man was pronounced dead at the scene.
The case has been classified as a second-degree murder investigation.
The suspects fled the area before the police arrived, police said.
Woman, 89, falls down, is run over, dies
An 89-year-old Pearl City woman died Monday after she fell down in a Pearl City parking lot and was run over by a car.
According to police, the woman was walking in the Pearl City Shopping Center parking lot toward Foodland at about 9 a.m. when she fell and was run over by a 2014 Nissan vehicle operated by a 37-year-old man. Police said the driver reported he didn’t see the woman.
The woman was transported in critical condition to Pali Momi Medical Center, where she died.
This was the 30th traffic-related fatality on Oahu this year, the same number as at this point last year.
AWOL prisoner is recaptured in Kakaako
A 35-year-old Oahu Community Correctional Center inmate who failed to return from a work furlough program pass Wednesday was captured by state deputy sheriffs Monday morning in Kakaako.
Ryan Walker, who was serving time for second-degree sex assault and first-degree burglary, left the prison Wednesday at 6 p.m. on a program pass and failed to return a few hours later.
He is facing a second-degree escape charge. His next parole hearing is scheduled for October.
He was arrested by the Sheriff Division Special Operations Fugitive Unit at 6:50 a.m.
Man with no address charged with assault
A 29-year-old man was charged Saturday with assaulting a 52-year-old man in Waikiki.
Daniel Morita, who has no local address, was charged with second-degree assault. His bail was set at $25,000.
Police said Morita struck the victim with a dangerous instrument at about 4:50 p.m. Friday. He was arrested shortly afterward at Waikiki Beach without incident.
Pedestrian hit by car is hospitalized
Paramedics treated and took a 50-year-old man in serious condition to a hospital after he was struck by a car Monday morning in downtown Honolulu.
The pedestrian was in a marked crosswalk when he was hit at South Pauahi and Bethel streets at 10:16 a.m., according to city Emergency Medical Services.
Further details of the accident were not available.
