Ronald Aguiar of Hilo estimates that this recipe for baked beans has been in his family for at least 100 years.
He’s 77 and remembers his grandmother Mary Aguiar Leite making it when he was a kid, and she’d been making it for years before that.
“When we had our gatherings this was a big hit. You put a big pot of that out and everybody goes crazy,” he said.
- 1/2 pound bacon, cut into pieces
- 1/2 Portuguese sausage (about 5 ounces), sliced
- 3 (15-ounce) cans pork and beans
- 1 cup ketchup
- 1 tablespoon brown sugar
- 1 large squeeze Log Cabin maple syrup
Heat oven to 350 degrees. Fry bacon and sausage; drain oil. Put in large baking dish with beans, ketchup and sugar. Mix well. Top with more strips of bacon. Bake 45 to 60 minutes or until bacon on top is brown.
