Honolulu firefighters and lifeguards were involved in several rescues Sunday afternoon.
The first involved an injured hiker on the Aiea Loop Trail. Firefighters hiked into the trail where they met a 46-year-old woman with an injured foot. They treated, stabilized and prepared her for pickup by the department’s Air One helicopter.
At about the time the helicopter was going to airlift the woman off the trail, the Honolulu Fire Department received a report of an injured swimmer at Spitting Cave. HFD rerouted the helicopter to Portlock where a girl had reportedly fallen 60 to 80 feet onto a ledge.
A Honolulu Emergency Medical Services Department spokeswoman said the 14-year-old did not clear her attempted jump into the ocean and hit the side of a cliff before falling into the water. A bystander helped her out of the water before firefighters and lifeguards arrived.
From there HFD’s helicopter transported the girl to a waiting ambulance at Koko Head Elementary School. EMS said the girl suffered abrasions and a gash to her head and was transported in stable condition to a trauma center.
HFD said its helicopter then went back to Aiea and transported the injured hiker to a clearing at Keaiwa State Recreation Area, near the trailhead, where an ambulance was waiting.
Lifeguards were called back to Spitting Cave later in the afternoon on a report of a swimmer in distress. They rescued a 20-year-old man and took him to the shore at Maunalua Bay.
Search suspended for third fisherman
The Kauai Fire Department has suspended its search for one of three fishermen who went missing July 3 in waters off Oahu’s North Shore.
Firefighters conducted another aerial search Sunday but did not find any evidence of the man.
Jensen Loo, Clint Oshima and Derek Thomas, all 30, left Haleiwa Boat Harbor on July 3 in the 20-foot vessel Iwa and were reported missing later that night.
On July 4 the Coast Guard spotted the Iwa overturned about 25 miles off the harbor.
Two bodies, believed to be those of two of the fishermen, were recovered off Kauai on Friday.
Autopsies will be performed on the bodies Tuesday.
Passenger in Pali Highway collision dies
A 93-year-old woman who was involved in a June 30 traffic collision in Kailua died Friday.
Honolulu police say Maria Artis of Honolulu was a passenger in a car traveling on Pali Highway near Castle Junction that was hit by a vehicle traveling in the opposite direction attempting to make a left turn. The drivers of the two vehicles sustained minor injuries. Artis is Honolulu’s 29th traffic fatality of 2016 compared with 28 over the same period last year.
