A genetic discovery led by a UH researcher could aid in pest control

University of Hawaii researcher Joanne Yew and her colleagues discovered a gene in vinegar flies that regulates the waxy coating of the insects’ bodies. Making the gene inactive causes the flies to lose that coating and stick to anything they come in contact with, prompting the gene’s name, “Spidey.”
