The first of eight Five Guys Burgers and Fries restaurants in Hawaii opened Tuesday to a crowd of more than 100 people at the Town Center of Mililani. The restaurant expected to serve 2,000 people by closing time.
A long line of patrons snaked around the corner of the building for the 11 a.m. grand opening. First in line was 7-year-old Micah Bona, who arrived with his family at 8 a.m.
Hawaii franchise owners Amannda and Ken Schneider of Seattle — who own nine Five Guys in Washington state — were joined by Honolulu Mayor Kirk Caldwell and entertainer Danny Kaleikini, who performed a Hawaiian blessing.
The popular Virginia-based eatery, known for its made-to-order burgers, offers a variety of toppings at no charge, freshly made fries and free peanuts. The 2,000-square-foot restaurant has hired 60 employees for the 60-seat location.
The next Oahu location, at Ka Makana Alii in Kapolei, is slated to open in August. Eight to 10 more restaurants are expected to open across the islands within the next few years.
The restaurant group established by the Murrell family in 1986 in Arlington, Va., opened its first franchise in 2003 and has expanded to more than 1,300 locations worldwide.
Five Guys will be open daily from 11 a.m. to 10 p.m. Call 625-4897.
