After a five-day manhunt, police Wednesday night arrested a 37-year-old man sought in connection with a shooting in the Liliha area and a sexual assault.
Jorge Cano Jr. was arrested at 9 p.m. on the 2700 block of Waialae Avenue, near the Hawaiian Humane Society, on suspicion of second-degree attempted murder, The arrest stemmed from a June 3 incident during which a 47-year-old man went to Cano’s Liliha Street home and the two got into an argument.
Cano allegedly shot the man twice in the stomach. The victim fled but later returned to the scene, and police were called. The victim was taken in serious condition to the Queen’s Medical Center.
The victim is a friend of a 27-year-old woman who police learned during the shooting investigation had been allegedly sexually assaulted at a Waialae Avenue apartment May 29 but had not reported it. She also told police that she had been held captive.
Cano also was arrested on suspicion of three counts of third-degree sexual assault and one count each of first-degree sexual assault and kidnapping. He was being held in the Beretania Street police cellblock following his arrest. No charges have been filed.
Cano also is being held on a $20,000 probation revocation warrant.
