A 24-year-old man was arrested Wednesday after he allegedly stole a truck that was towing an all-terrain vehicle near Turtle Bay Resort, leading police on a two-hour chase from the North Shore to Aiea, Kaneohe and ending in Kailua.
The stolen truck hit a car driven by an elderly woman on the Likelike Highway, near Hawaiian Memorial Park in Kaneohe. The woman was not injured.
Apprehended in Kailua, the suspect was arrested on suspicion of reckless driving, fleeing the scene of an accident, car theft, driving without a license and an outstanding contempt warrant.
The incident began at 7:40 a.m. when police responded to a report of a stolen truck towing an ATV in the Turtle Bay area. Police said the truck was then driven to Kunia, where the ATV became separated from the vehicle and was recovered by police.
Officers continued to follow the truck as it traveled to Aiea and onto the Likelike Highway toward Kaneohe. After hitting the elderly motorist’s car, the damaged truck fled the scene of the accident. It came to a stop in Kailua at about 9:30 a.m.
The suspect was taken to the hospital for treatment of injuries that were not life-threatening.
Police are investigating whether the suspect is linked to the theft of construction equipment earlier Wednesday morning in Kapolei.
