On Feb. 25, the 31st annual Quiksilver in Memory of Eddie Aikau Big Wave Invitational was held in waves whose faces soared to 50 feet. Zak Noyle was the only photographer who stayed in the water throughout the eight-hour competition, without a break, and 10 of his hitherto unseen pictures from the day are being shown at T Galleria by DFS Hawaii in Waikiki.

On Saturday from 7 to 9 p.m., the public is invited to a free event at the gallery where they can view the exclusive photos and meet Clyde Aikau, the younger brother of Eddie Aikau and a former winner of the contest. Also in attendance will be Mason Ho, Koa Rothman and Makua Rothman from this year’s lineup and many other big-wave greats.

John John Florence, 23, won this year’s Eddie, the first to be held since 2009. Due to strict rules on swell size, conditions and duration, the big-wave event has gone on only nine times in 31 years.

The surfers and Noyle will sign Noyle’s photographs for buyers, and proceeds from sales will benefit the Eddie Aikau Foundation, whose mission is to promote the education and advancement of Hawaiian culture through advocacy, education and philanthropy.

Also on exhibit will be the camera and fins Noyle used in the water that day; the surfboard ridden by Koa Rothman; and the Aqua Lung inflatable ocean safety vest that was used for the first time in this year’s Eddie.

Ocean gear and T-shirts also will be for sale, and purchasers of beauty products from DFS Hawaii on Saturday can receive a free DFS Zak Noyle tote bag.
