Kalihi skater crossing against light seriously injured after hit by car
A 21-year-old skateboarder was hit by a car just after midnight while crossing the road against a red “Don’t Walk” sign, police said.
Emergency Medical Services said the accident occurred at 12:16 a.m. at Middle and Rose streets.
The skateboarder, from the Kalihi area, was taken by ambulance to the hospital in critical condition, but was later upgraded to fair, police said.
Police said he skateboarder was crossing Middle Street in a marked crosswalk, but against the red palm, from east to west.
The driver was an 18-year-old from the Kalihi area, driving north when he collided with the skateboarder.
Alcohol and speed are not factors in the accident, police said.

HNN said he was riding a skateboard.
I see this happening all the time with skateboarders–some of them are wearing headphones, oblivious to all the traffic around them, zipping across streets and through busy intersections with no regard for themselves or others.
Let Darwinism run its course
Sad for the driver. He’ll have to pay for the damage to his own car and it wasn’t his fault.
The problem here was the “Don’t Walk” sign that was lit. Had it also read “Don’t Roll” then an accident might have been prevented.
