State Sen. Sam Slom will undergo coronary bypass surgery later this week, according to his office.

Slom, the only Republican lawmaker in the 25-member Senate, was hospitalized last week.

“Although I would prefer to be present at this coming Tuesday’s floor session, my doctors assure me that having this routine surgery at the earliest date ensures my ability to be present for the final vote in the best of health,” Slom said in a written statement today.

Slom has represented Hawaii’s 9th senatorial district since 1996.

There is always a risk when having surgery. May things go smoothly so that you can get back to work representing us.

There have been many advances in this type of surgery but it’s quite dangerous and not a simple decision when the time comes to go under the knife. The important thing is to have all you legal matters finalized in the event that things do not go as planned. My brother didn’t and it created a nightmare for his family afterwards. Of course, Sam knows that but many others do not.
