Hotel Street was closed in both directions after a bus struck and killed a pedestrian in Chinatown.

Police say a man in his 50s may have been sneezing when he was hit by a city bus and killed in Chinatown tonight.

Lt. Baron Lee with the Honolulu Police Department said witnesses saw the man on the sidewalk, bent over as he sneezed when he was struck by the bus on Hotel Street.

The man was close to the curb, and it is unknown if he fell into the street or got too close as the bus was pulling up to the stop, Lee said.

Police dispatch received the call at 7:34 p.m. in front of the Chinatown Gateway Plaza.

Police shut down Hotel Street in both directions between Nuuanu Avenue and Bethel Street, while they investigate.

Lee said the pedestrian appeared to be a Caucasian man in his 50s.

    What a drag.

He must have been way too close to the street. That area has a pretty wide sidewalk..

What a sad thing to have happened, the driver must feel awful. I never quite understand why I see so many people stand people right at the edge of the curb. It’s as if they feel the closer they are to the street, the quicker the light will turn in their favor. I hope we don’t have to paint bright yellow caution stripes along our curbs now and pass a law about where to stand.

What bad timing. The morning news said he may have been intoxicated. Sad nevertheless.

For the two people that matter, TheBus driver and the deceased, only those two know what they were thinking at the exact moment of impact. Not to put any negative thoughts into TheBus system, however many TheBus driver have run red lights in order keep their GPS driven TheBus schedule on track. Sometimes though during rush hour, when many buses of the same route arrive one after another at the same TheBus stop, we know that the delay is due to Rush Hour, or a hangup somewhere such a traffic accident. Riding TheBus can be dangerous sometimes, especially when TheBus driver is intent on keeping their schedules. I hope that no TheBus driver is prone to falling sleepy during their routes because that could be terrible and one of the manifestations of it came to light last night as a person lost their life. Be safe better than sorry and that goes for everyone who is going from one place to another. What does it matter if one is just even five minutes late? Doctors never keep their schedules unless u r in an Emergency Room, in which the cost of that service is much more than normal. With the shortage of medical professionals, maybe more need to go into the medical field, rather than Law. I know of a person that worked with me, who was a young Structural Engineer, who switched over to the Medical Field. When I saw him in Kapiolani Medical Center, I asked him, “hey, what goes?”. Small world. With nearly seven billion of us in this world and at one time having 240,000 tourists in these islands at any single time, it may be prudent to develop a system such as TheTrain, so that tourists can efficiently go from Waikiki to Kapolei and return, with lots of shopping bags filled with goodies of course. Not all of Wakiki is filled with Trump Hotels and Ritz-Carltons. There is for example the EWA hotel, next to the Queen Kapiolani Hotel, near Kapahulu Avenue, that sometimes go for $89 a night. Well it is getting close to the time that Hawaii Five-O will be renewed for another season and let’s hope that CBS renews it. It would be a sad day when McGarrett goes down under, however that’s where he is from anyway, so oh well. Deepest condolences to the deceased, and we always don’t want people to die before their time, because all life is important, especially human life. Thank you for your time and I shall see you soon.
