Retired Navy Adm. Thomas B. Fargo will lead a state committee that will orchestrate the 75th anniversary of the Dec. 7, 1941, attack on Pearl Harbor, Gov. David Ige announced last week.
This year’s commemoration will be guided by the theme “Honoring the past, inspiring the future,” reinforcing the country’s commitment to security and friendship among people and nations, Ige said.
Ige has signed a proclamation recognizing the 75th Commemoration of Pearl Harbor Committee composed of officials from government, the military, the business community and Pearl Harbor historic sites who will be involved in planning for the December event.
Several groups, including the National Park Service, Hawaii’s congressional delegation and the Hawaii Tourism Authority, would like President Barack Obama to be the keynote speaker.
Fargo served as commander of U.S. Forces in the Pacific from May 2, 2002, to Feb. 26, 2005, when he retired.
Prior to that Fargo was the 29th commander in chief of the U.S. Pacific Fleet from October 1999 to May 2002.
