Vog to blow away slowly

CRAIG GIMA / CGIMA@STARADVERTISER.COM As tradewinds slowly return, the vog over Oahu should blow away.

The anticipated return of vog-clearing trade winds did not occur quite as forecast on Saturday as Hawaii skies remained hazy amid light to moderate winds.

A high-pressure system north-northwest of Kauai is expected to strengthen overnight as it moves east-northeast. The result should allow moderate tradewinds to spread across the state, according to the National Weather Service.

Showers are expected for Oahu and Kaui overnight and into Sunday.

Tradewinds are expected to diminish by Sunday night.

Forecasters predict overall dry weather through the coming week.

Meanwhile, the run of hotter-than-usual weather continued Saturday as temperatures in Honolulu and Hilo reached record levels, according to the National Weather Service.

The temperature in Hilo hit 87 degrees, matching the previous record for Jan. 30 set in 1980.

In Honolulu, temperatures peaked at 84 degrees, tying the record for the date set in 1995.

Since Jan. 24, 10 daily records have been matched or exceeded in the state.
