Shark signs removed at Hanalei bay, but lifeguards advise no swimming

Lifeguards removed shark warning signs from Hanalei Bay today, but are still advising beachgoers to stay out of the water because of rough ocean conditions.

A Minnesota man was paddling to shore after surfing in Hanalei Bay Thursday, when he was bitten by what he believed to be a shark at about 2 p.m.

Lifeguards treated the man for lacerations on both of his hands and he was able to drive himself for further medical treatment.

As a safety precaution, lifeguards posted “Shark Sighted” and “No Swimming” signs along the beach and warned beachgoers to stay out of the water until further notice.

The Department of Land and Natural Resources was also notified.

Lifeguards decided today to remove the shark signs, but are still advising beachers to visit lifeguarded beaches at Lydgate, Poipu or Salt Pond because of dangerous ocean conditions.

North and west shore beaches on Kauai are under a high surf advisory, with waves of 14 to 18 feet on north shores and 8 to 12 feet on west shores.

Forecasters say beachgoers can expect strong breaking waves, shore break and strong currents that could make swimming difficult and dangerous.
