Lahaina balcony fire traced to cigarette
An unattended cigarette accidentally caused a fire on a balcony decking of a Lahaina home Sunday night.
Maui County firefighters said the occupants of the two-story home on Lahilahi Place extinguished the fire with a garden hose before firefighters arrived.
The fire was reported at 6:01 p.m. Sunday evening.
Occupants who were home at the time smelled smoke and discovered the decking on the balcony on fire.
After investigation, it was determined that an unattended cigarette on the balcony decking caused the fire.
Just before the fire was discovered, another occupant was seen smoking in the area where the fire started, but had left the home. The fire was ruled accidental.
