MONTREAL » Daniel Dion, the older brother of pop singer Celine Dion, died today, just two days after the death of the entertainer’s husband, Rene Angelil, from throat cancer.

Celine Dion’s representative Kim Jakwerth released a statement that Daniel Dion, 59, died today surrounded by his family after battling cancer for several years. The statement said he died at a palliative care center in Terrebonne, Quebec, outside Montreal.

His death was announced just two days after the 73-year-old Angelil died in suburban Las Vegas after a long battle with throat cancer. Angelil was Celine Dion’s manager for decades, molding her from a French-speaking Canadian ingénue into one of the world’s most successful singers, best known for the smash hit “My Heart Will Go On,” the theme from “Titanic.”

The family is “remembering a gentle and reserved man of many talents,” the statement said.

Daniel Dion, the father of two daughters, was the eighth of 14 Dion children. The Dion siblings, including Celine, performed at their parents’ small piano bar called Le Vieux Baril (“The Old Barrel”) in the town of Charlemagne, Quebec.

Viewing will take place next Saturday, a day after Angelil’s funeral is set to take place at Montreal’s Notre Dame Basilica, the same church where he married the singer in 1994.

Daniel Dion’s religious funeral will be held several days later at a church in the family’s hometown of Charlemagne.

My deepest ALOHA to Celine and her ohana. Can’t imagine what she’s going through.

  2. Cellodad says:

Yes, I agree. My heartfelt best wishes and condolences go out to Celine, a consummate artist who has brought joy through her voice to millions of people.

SA: Could you not edit better than “after a long ballet with throat cancer”? I don’t think anyone in that position ever thought that it was a “ballet” with cancer. Spell-check is not a substitute for a mean nasty balding editor with a cup full of red pencils. Could you folks think about it?

Sometimes the Apple word checker changes your words with their own choice. Irritating. Don’t know how to turn it off. Apple so imperfect. Whenever I start a sentence with MS Words the first word is capitalized. Not so in Apple. MS is better.

Rene was very instrumental in guiding Celine in the right path of her future. A big lost to both, Celine, and the world. Rest in peace, my friend.

Best to take life one day at a time. God has a purpose in what he does with us. We should honor Him by hugging our family members, and respecting their values.

Need not add more to the Posters’ beautiful comments ( paninolo, Cellodad and mikethenovice) they have said it all and more!

The brother decided everyone has suffered too much and let it go. Better to let everyone mourn and move on. Don’t drag it on. Cancer treatments can just prolong the suffering and make money for doctors and pharmaceutical companies.

Many who have been treated for cancer are on their renewed life with the cancer in remission. It is only fair that the doctors and the company be compensated.
