Bye-bye vog. Hello surf.

The National Weather Service posted a high surf warning this afternoon as surf of 30 to 40 feet builds on north shores of Oahu, Kauai County, Maui and Molokai.

Meanwhile, forecasters also said the vog that’s lingered over Oahu should be leaving this evening as westerly winds ahead of a cold front blow the haze toward Maui and the Big Island.

The weak cold front could also bring a few showers to Kauai this evening and Oahu overnight into the weekend as it stalls over Oahu and Molokai Friday. North and northeasterly winds behind the front will also push the vog south and bring the greatest chance of showers to north and northeast slopes.

The high surf warning is in effect until 6 p.m. Saturday and includes west shores of Oahu, Kauai County and Molokai.

Forecasters expect the surf to peak Friday and drop to 20 to 25 feet on Saturday on north shores.

West shores of Oahu should see 18- to 25-foot waves Friday.

West shores of the Big Island are under a high surf advisory.

“These dangerous conditions mean that only highly-experienced persons should enter the water,” forecasters said. “Inexperienced persons should remain off beaches and adjacent beachfront areas. Large breaking surf, significant shorebreak and dangerous currents make entering the water very hazardous. Anyone entering the water could face significant injury or death.”

Meanwhile, forecasters said the vog may briefly return Monday, but westerly winds ahead of another weak cold front should blow it away from Oahu Tuesday.

Tradewinds may return Wednesday to keep the vog away through the end of the week.

With the north winds, temperatures are likely to be cool — in the 60s at night and highs will be in the low 80s through the holiday weekend.
