Surf, snow, lighter winds and passing showers are in the forecast for the week leading up to New Year’s Day.

“A series of fronts is expected to pass north of us or just barely brush the islands,” said Derek Wroe, a meteorologist with the Honolulu office of the National Weather Service.

Last week’s gusty tradewinds are weakening today and will become light and variable starting this afternoon into Tuesday.

“The absence of the trades may make it feel warmer,” Wroe said.

Meanwhile, the weather service extended a high surf advisory for east, north and west shores of most islands until 6 this evening.

Surf along east shores of Kauai, Oahu, Molokai and Maui is expected to be 5 to 8 feet, dropping to 3 to 6 feet Tuesday as the tradewinds weaken.

North and west shores of Kauai and Niihau should see 14 to 18 foot surf, while swells of 12 to 14 feet are forecast for north shores of Oahu, Molokai and Maui today.

Summits of the Big Island got a dusting of snow overnight and could see more snowfall this morning as the weather remains cool and cloudy at the top of Mauna Kea and Mauna Loa.

The road to the summit of Mauna Kea was closed this morning because of icy conditions.

Moderate tradewinds are expected to return Wednesday, but will drop off again on New Year’s Eve as another weather system approaches.

If the forecast holds, it could be a smoky New Year’s Eve without the tradewinds to blow away the haze from fireworks.

Forecasters expect tradewinds to blow some showers to windward and mauka areas and leeward areas could see some isolated afternoon rain caused by daytime heating when the tradewinds drop off.

The forecast for Honolulu and south shores of Oahu calls for mostly to partly sunny skies today and partly cloudy conditions tonight.

Tradewinds of 10 to 15 mph will become light tonight and shift to the southwest by Tuesday afternoon.

Highs will be between 77 and 82 degrees and lows are expected to be between 59 and 67 degrees.
