Woman critically injured in Maui crash; Pregnant passenger OK
A 19-year-old woman was critically injured this morning after the car she was driving crossed into oncoming traffic on Honoapiilani Highway in West Maui and hit two other vehicles.
The woman driving the car was ejected from her vehicle. She was taken to Maui Memorial Hospital after the 8:30 a.m. accident. Police closed the roadway nearly mile post 17 for more than three hours. The thoroughfare was reopened at midday.
According to Maui County’s Department of Fire and Public Safety, shortly before the crash, the small, passenger sedan was spotted moving erratically in the southbound lane. When it crossed into on-coming traffic and collided with a commercial truck in the north-bound lane.
Another passenger vehicle in the north-bound lane was also side-swiped. A pregnant woman passenger in the second car and the driver of the car were uninjured. But the woman, who was 4 months pregnant, was advised to see her doctor.
The driver and two other people in the truck were also uninjured.
