Seattle police fatally shoot man following high-speed chase
SEATTLE » A man authorities say stole two vehicles at gunpoint in separate carjackings was shot and killed by Seattle police after firing at officers during a high-speed chase.
A man in his 30s entered a downtown coffee shop Sunday afternoon armed with a handgun, prompting employees to call police. Police say the man then fled to a nearby tattoo parlor before stealing a vehicle at gunpoint and driving north. Authorities say he then stole another vehicle, shooting at pursuing officers as they followed him as he drove northbound onto Interstate 5 before exiting in the city’s Ravenna neighborhood.
Police say the suspect again fired at officers, who fatally wounded him.
Several officers and other motorists were treated for non-life-threatening injuries caused by collisions during the incident, which is being reviewed by the department’s Force Investigation Team.
“The suspect vehicle crashed into police cars, crashed into civilian cars,” Police Chief Kathleen O’Toole told reporters at the scene. “Thankfully, no one else in the neighborhood was injured.”
Police say up to 11 officers are believed to have exchanged gunfire with the man at two separate locations during the chase.
