Dengue fever cases rise to 112

STAR-ADVERTISER / NOV. 19 Virginia Pressler, the director of the state Department of Health holds a briefing on the dengue fever outbreak on Hawaii island.

The number of people in Hawaii infected by dengue fever continues to rise, and officials are asking the public to help limit the spread of the virus.

The State Department of Health reported Monday that 112 people were infected on Hawaii’s Big Island since September 11. That includes 14 visitors to the Aloha State.

Department of Health Director Virginia Pressler says there have been no cases of dengue fever so far on Oahu, Maui or Kauai.

Officials say people throughout the state should remove standing water where mosquitoes breed and dump excess water out of potted plants. They say people should repair holes in their screens. The recommend wearing long-sleeved clothing and pants and using bug spray to prevent mosquito bites.

Officials say the outbreak hasn’t affected Hawaii tourism.

I still predict 300 by Christmas

Instead of banning us from commenting, have a SA active staff reading and decide as we type what you want removed. We don’t have any idea where the line of demarcation is with the SA.

Neither does the SA. Even when their rag said the comments were “Sent for review” they never reappeared back in the comment section. Lost forever in Cyberspace.

I would die laughing when their rag would “Flag” the exact same words used by the reporter in the article. Talk about utterly dysfunctional word inspection protocols. Flagging commonly used words, Pidgin, Hawaiian specific words. What next?

That just means we go to Hawaii Island next year for Christmas instead of this one. Too bad. Had to cancel 4 tickets and a nice room for a few days.

    • mikethenovice says:

Now I see empty HI5 cans in back of several pick up trucks not being attended to for months on end. As long as it is a refundable fee, people will not too it out. Make it a non refundable fee so we have no reason to keep it around.

It just has to run it’s course. The other islands aren’t out of the woods either. Just takes one bite.
