A fire that destroyed three vehicles and damaged a building in Kalihi last week was started by a downed power line, firefighters said today. 

The fire started about 3:25 p.m. Friday near 1714 Mary St. and was brought under control in less than a half hour. 

Honolulu Fire Department Capt. David Jenkins said the cause was determined to be accidental and due to a downed power line. 

He said the resulting two-alarm fire caused $7,150 in damage to a building and destroyed three vehicles. 

It was unknown why the power line had fallen. 

Firefighters said the building next to the vehicles, which were parked on the street, was also damaged. 

Darren Pai, a spokesman for Hawaiian Electric Co., said in a statement that “our top priority” is the safety of the public and the work crews. 

“We are continuing to investigate this situation and will take any corrective measures that may be necessary as quickly as possible,” he said.
