Police suspect fire intentionally set at Kaewai Elementary
Police are investigating after firefighters said someone intentionally set a fire at a Kalihi elementary school today.
The two-alarm fire started about 9:25 a.m. Sunday at Kaewai Elementary School, at 1929 Kamehameha IV Road, down the road from the Kalihi police substation, said Honolulu Fire Department Capt. Kevin Mokulehua.
About 35 firefighters from nine companies responded and extinguished the blaze within 20 minutes. Firefighters were able to contain the fire to an outside storage area about eight feet wide between the school office and library, Mokulehua said.
The fire caused $10,000 in damage to the exterior and to items stored in the area, such as office equipment and air conditioners.
Mokulehua said a firefighter determined the fire was intentionally set and forwarded the investigation to police.
