9-year-old who died after football practice had heart defect
POMEROY, Ohio » A coroner says a 9-year-old Ohio boy who collapsed at a youth football practice died as the result of a heart defect.
The Meigs County sheriff’s office says Wyatt Barber’s death resulted from an abnormal left main coronary artery in his heart. He had no other injuries.
A coach found the third-grader unconscious on the ground and not breathing Monday after players took a break from running sprints during a practice at a high school football field in southeastern Ohio. The practice was a walk-through and not a contact session.
Coaches performed CPR on Wyatt until medics arrived at the school in Olive Township, a rural community about 100 miles southeast of Columbus. Wyatt was taken to a hospital, where he died Monday night.
