The Catholic Diocese of Honolulu is organizing two events for veterans trying to set up a household and find a job.
Vets who need to furnish new residences are invited to pick up some free supplies at a "housewarming party," 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. today at the Kamiano Center on Fort Street Mall, makai of the Cathedral Basilica of Our Lady of Peace. A free lunch will be served.
Small kitchen electronics, pots and pans, dish towels, kitchen and bathroom rugs, shower curtains, pillows, blankets, sheets, small lamps and other items will be available.
The event titled "Stand Down and Job Fair" will be held 8:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. Nov. 10 at the Hawaii National Guard Building 19 in Kalaeloa, 1787 Shangri La St.
The fair will offer guidance on how to prepare a resume for a federal position and acquire housing. It will also offer information about the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs’ business and health benefits, and assist with legal matters.
In addition, veterans will have an opportunity to practice for job interviews, meet potential employers and submit job applications.
In addition to door prizes, there will be free medical services, such as flu shots, as well as haircuts and clothing available.
Jewish cemetery created on Kauai
The Kauai Jewish Memorial Garden, the Garden Isle’s first designated Jewish cemetery, was recently established within the Kalapaki Bay Memorial Park in Lihue, overlooking Nawiliwili Harbor.
Previously, while local mortuaries had accommodated Jewish tradition in pre-burial preparations, there was no designated burial site. The Jewish cemetery, with special interment requirements, is in the alii section of Kalapaki park.
