Man dies at Kaena Point after large wave sweeps him out to sea
A man believed to be in his 50s died when he and two other fishermen were apparently swept out to sea by a large wave at the Moi Hole at the end of the road at Kaena Point State Park this afternoon, according to an Emergency Services Department spokeswoman.
A high surf warning is in effect for north and west shores on Oahu, Kauai County, Maui and Molokai.
Lifeguards on rescue watercraft recovered the man’s body and he was pronounced dead at the scene, said Shayne Enright, an Emergency Services Department spokeswoman, in an email.
Paramedics treated another man, believed to be about 49 years old, who was found on the rocks at the Moi Hole. He suffered multiple abrasions and cuts and was taken to the hospital in serious condition.
A man, believed to be about 30 years old, was also injured after he was swept away by a wave and tumbled onto rocks. He was also treated and taken to the hospital in serious condition.
Enright said lifeguards warned the men about the dangerous surf conditions, but the warnings were disregarded.

She said a wave, more than 10 feet in height, swept them off the rocks, where they were fishing.
Wave faces this afternoon were about 5 to 12 feet, with bigger sets, at Kaena Point, Enright said.
On Kauai, the 33-foot sailing vessel Serenity ran aground in high surf, after it broke its mooring and washed onto the rocks on the west side of Hanalei Bay at Waipa.
A spokeswoman for the Department of Land and Natural Resources said salvage removal of the sailboat will begin this weekend after the surf subsides.
The vessel was leaving Hanalei Bay when its motor died. The owner, Randy Perez, hosted sail, but it tore and the vessel dropped anchor in the bay, said Deborah Ward, a DNLR spokeswoman. But the high surf broke the Serenity from its mooring, she said.
Perez was injured trying to get off the boat and was taken to a hospital for treatment, Ward said.
He told the Kauai DNLR boating manager that he did not have insurance to salvage the boat.
Kauai County is warning beachgoers not to swim at north shore beaches west of the Hanalei Pavilion because of the high surf and dangerous ocean conditions.
Forecasters said surf is rising to 20 to 30 feet today and tonight on north shores and 15 to 20 feet on west shores.
“Expect ocean water occasionally sweeping across portions of beaches, very strong breaking waves and strong longshore and rip currents,” forecasters said. “Anyone entering the water could face significant injury or death.”
Another large reinforcement swell is expected to arrive on Thursday and peak Thursday night into Friday.
Forecasters said the second swell could be even bigger than the first. However, it’s not clear yet how large the waves will be.
