Hikers safe after spending night on Kaau Crater Trail
Three hikers who got stranded after dark on the Kaau Crater Trail in Palolo Valley hiked out on their own this morning.
Two men, ages 19 and 21, and a 19-year-old woman started hiking around 2 p.m. Sunday but found themselves unable to safely continue after dark.
The Honolulu Fire Department was alerted to the situation at 7:23 p.m. Sunday.
HFD spokesman Capt. James Todd said the area where the hikers stopped made a possible air rescue “extremely dangerous” and so the trio was advised to remain there until daylight.
No injuries are reported.
