A 21-year-old man died Saturday afternoon in an apparent drowning incident in waters off Spitting Cave in Portlock.

Shortly before 3 p.m., Ocean Safety and Honolulu Fire Department personnel responded to an emergency call regarding a swimmer in distress. Lifeguards discovered the man’s submerged body and brought it back to Maunalua Bay boat ramp with the assistance of firefighters.

Emergency Medical Services personnel pronounced the man dead at the scene.

The incident occurred as the south and east shores of all islands are under a high-surf advisory due to a large well generated by Hurricane Olaf.

“As always, we strongly advise not going into the ocean where there are no lifeguards,” said Ocean Safety spokesperson Shayne Enright in an email report. “High surf makes conditions extremely dangerous.”

Elsewhere, lifeguards made eight rescues and performed 400 preventive actions at Sandy Beach, as well as 100 preventive actions at Makapuu.

Also on Kauai, a 60-year-old man visiting from Porter Ranch, Calif. died after having difficulty swimming at Shipwreck Beach in Po‘ipu. Bystanders brought the victim to shore at approximately 1:17 p.m. and performed CPR until lifeguards and firefighters arrived. The man was taken to Wilcox Hospital where he was pronounced dead.
