East Oahu trail closes again

The Makapuu Lighthouse Trail in Kaiwi State Scenic Shoreline will be closed again this week to continue repairs, paving and other improvements.

The state Department of Land and Natural Resources’ Division of State Parks said the trail will reopen just for the weekend — Oct. 10-11 from 7 a.m. to 6:45 p.m. — and will be closed again Oct. 12-13.

During these closure dates, the gate will be locked and the public is not allowed to access the parking lot or Makapuu Trail. The closure does not affect the Makapuu Lookout along Kalanianaole Highway and people can access the Kaiwi shoreline from the Sandy Beach end of the park.

The park may open again on Oct. 14 if the repaving of the trail is completed. Visitors can hike to the summit but the upper lookout will remain closed as construction continues on the renovations to this feature. Visitors should be aware of construction activity in the area and the movement of vehicles along the trail and roadway

The additional closure days are needed to complete the removal of the existing and deteriorating asphalt, lay the gravel base course, and then repave the one-mile long trail.

The project will not affect the Makapuu Lookout along Kalanianaole Highway. The Kaiwi shoreline will remain open during the project but during the trail closures, people must enter from the Sandy Beach end of the park, as the parking lot for the Makapuu Trail will be closed.
