Dignity Honolulu (LGBT Catholics) will commemorate “Solidarity Sunday” this week, an annual campaign of Dignity USA since 1995 to end violence against gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender people.
The local group will make its annual visit to the Cathedral Basilica of Our Lady of Peace at the 10:30 a.m. Sunday Mass in silent protest of the Catholic Church’s stance against homosexuality, according to a news release by Dignity President Gene Corpuz.
“We still hear news of LGBT people being attacked or bullied because of their sexual orientation or gender identity. Some are also being denied the sacraments or lose their job or parish ministry position based on their sexual orientation, gender identity or relationship status,” he said in the release.
A screening of the documentary “A Time for Dialogue” will be held at 5:30 p.m. at St. Mary’s Episcopal Church, 2062 S. King St., instead of the weekly liturgy. The film documents Dignity USA’s 1983 convention in Seattle, showing the Mass in St. James Cathedral with a message from Archbishop Raymond Hunthausen, and sharing insights of clergy and theologians in support of welcoming gay and lesbian Catholics.
The Solidarity Sunday brochure, which includes the pledge, prayer and a rainbow ribbon, will be distributed at both events. For information call 352-7558 or visit honolulu.dignityusa.org.
