Police identify pedestrian killed in Kahului accident

A vehicle hit and killed a 48-year-old Wailuku man crossing Kaahumanu Avenue Sunday night, Maui police reported.

Police identified the victim as Terence John Moniz.

Moniz was not in a marked crosswalk when a Ford Edge multipurpose vehicle struck him at 8:21 p.m. Sunday about a tenth of a mile east of Kahului Beach Road, police said.

Paramedics took him in critical condition to Maui Memorial Medical Center, where he died.

Maui police said the vehicle, driven by 73-year-old Kihei man, was traveling east on Kaahumanu Avenue when it hit the pedestrian, who “darted across the roadway,” police said.

The driver was not injured.
