Honolulu Fire Department investigators say the fire in August that burned a two-story Pauoa Valley house, killing an elderly couple, was accidental.
Herbert and Jeanette Inouye, both 87, died in the fire at 444 Kekuanoni Place on Aug. 10. A 15-year-old boy who also lived there escaped without injury.
Fire spokesman Capt. David Jenkins said smoking material found in the woman’s bedroom was the probable cause. The house was engulfed in flames when firefighters arrived at 11:59 a.m.
The couple were longtime residents of Pauoa.
Herbert Inouye, a graduate of Farrington High School, served as district manager for Clairol before his retirement, while Jeanette Inouye worked as a secretary at Occidental Underwriters before retiring.
A celebration of life for the couple is scheduled for 5:30 p.m. Sept. 22 at Nuuanu Memorial Park. Visitation begins at 4:30 p.m.
