Maui fire officials unable to find cause of brush fires
Maui fire investigators were unable to determine the cause of two brush fires that burned what are believed to have been homeless encampments in West Maui on Thursday.
The fires were reported minutes apart. Fire officials said the area — the Kohoma Stream gulch next to North Hakau Place and North Hopoe Place — is frequented by homeless people who establish makeshift shelters in the brush.
No injuries were reported. The only damage reported was to a property fence.
