All lanes of Farrington Highway reopened at about 6:30 a.m. Monday after a 24-inch water transfer main broke and closed the road over the weekend in Nanakuli. The closure caused major delays for people trying to get to and leave Waianae.

A Board of Water Supply contractor finished repairs on the road overnight. But some west-bound lanes remained closed and one town-bound lane was diverted to a bypass bridge until crews disinfected the repaired main.

Residents from Honokai Hale to Waianae should continue to use water sparingly and for priority needs only-cooking, drinking, and personal hygiene only – until tests can be completed on water quality and the transmission line reconnected to the system.

The break in the 24-inch main happened at about 4:30 p.m. Saturday in Nanakuli and initially cut off water service for most of the Leeward Coast. The main that broke supplies 60 percent of the water to the Leeward Coast.

The break also closed Farrington Highway in Nanakuli. Cars were re-routed off the highway to surface streets and the bypass bridge around the break.
