Man who died after canoe overturned is identified
A 50-year-old Kihei man died after his one-man canoe overturned off Sugar Beach in Kihei Tuesday night.
Maui County Police identified the victim as Darin Kobatake, of Kihei.
A stand-up paddle boarder heard Kobatake yelling and saw him in the water with the canoe overturned at about 6 p.m.
By the time the paddle boarder reached him, Kobatake was unconscious, police said.
The paddle boarder started CPR and the Coast Guard located them about a mile offshore and took them to Maalaea Harbor.
But despite more lifesaving efforts, Kobatake was pronounced dead at the scene.
