Fish drop from sky in Alaska

FAIRBANKS, Alaska » Eel-like fish have been reported as falling from the sky in Fairbanks, confusing residents.

The Fairbanks Daily News-Miner reports that the Alaska Department of Fish and Game has reported four adult Artic lampreys falling from the sky. Officials say gulls are probably to blame for picking up the fish and dropping them onto lawns.

The Arctic lamprey is a roughly foot-long eel-like fish with no jaw but a set of teeth. The fish spawn in the Chena River.

Because lampreys aren’t well understood the department encourages people to call if they spot more of the fish. They aren’t easily caught with a typical net or with a fishing hook.
