Firefighters responded and extricated an unresponsive man from an overturned truck after the crash on Mott Smith Drive.

A 44-year-old Pearl City man died Thursday after his pickup truck overturned in Makiki, police said.

Police said the driver was speeding as he headed north on Mott-Smith Drive, lost control of the 2005 Toyota truck and traveled into a yard located on a steep embankment.

When the driver tried to re-enter the roadway, he hit a curb, flipping the truck onto its roof at 3:48 p.m. on Mott-Smith Drive, 300 feet north of the Kalawahine Place intersection.

Firefighters responded and extricated the man, who was pinned inside the truck.

The driver received head and internal injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene, police said.

Police said speed was a factor, and alcohol and drugs are possible factors.

Police closed Mott-Smith between Kalawahine Place and Makiki Heights Drive for about 3 1/2 hours while they investigated the accident. The road was reopened at about 7:20 p.m.

This was the 21st Oahu traffic fatality this year compared to 23 the same time last year.
