Army says ‘active burning’ at Schofield ends Wednesday

The Army said Wednesday was the last day of “active burning” to remove brush on the Schofield Barracks training range complex.

“We’ll be spending the next few days mopping up and monitoring for any lingering hot spots,” the Army said. “Also we have a team conducting aerial reconnaissance to assess the amount of smoke in the area, due to several concerns received regarding smoke and ash.”

The annual burn began Monday to remove brush around existing range firebreaks. The Army said its plan was to conduct a deliberate and phased “prescribed burn” of approximately 1,200 acres by systematically burning small areas at a time.

The burn is expected to improve safety by removing highly flammable guinea grass and other vegetation, the Army said. If left unchecked, the grasses become fuel sources for wildfires that can be difficult to contain.
