Hawaiian Airlines plane, engine smoking, lands safely on Maui
A Hawaiian Airlines flight with 73 passengers and a crew of five made an emergency landing in Maui Tuesday morning when one of its two engines malfunctioned.
Tim Sakahara, state Department of Transportation, said one engine was smoking when the aircraft landed at Kahului Airport.
State firefighters sprayed foam to douse the engine.
Hawaiian Airlines flight 118 left Honolulu at 6:55 a.m. for Kailua-Kona, but was forced to land at Kahului Airport when it “experienced a left engine surge en route,” Ann Botticelli, Hawaiian Airlines spokeswoman reported.
”The flight crew elected to divert to Maui, declared an emergency and landed safely in OGG (Maui) at 7:26 am,” she added.
No injuries were reported.

All of the passengers remained on board of the Boeing 717 jet.
Two of Kahului Airport’s runways were closed at 7:40 a.m. delaying or diverting other flights.
Sakahara said he didn’t know how many flights were affected, but said the effect was “minimal.”
Hawaiian Airlines Flight 156, bound for Maui, returned to Honolulu because the Kahului Airport was closed.
The airport reopened at 8:25 am. after foam and other debris were cleared from the runways.
The plane taxied to a gate under its own power, Hawaiian Airlines said.
Botticelli said passengers on flight 118 were accommodated on later flights to Kona.
It’s the second emergency landing for Hawaiian Airlines on Maui this month.
On May 1, a Hawaiian Airline Boeing 767-300 jet carrying 224 passengers and 10 crew on a flight to Oakland returned to Maui and made an emergency landing after an odor of fumes was detected in the cabin.
No serious injuries were reported, but two people suffered minor injuries when passengers evacuate the Boeing 767-300 aircraft on emergency slides.
The problems was blamed on equipment which controls air pressure and recycles cabin air malfunctioned. The equipment was replaced and the plane returned to service.
