Maui High School students Joseph Burger and David Casayuran won the 2015 Ford/AAA Student Auto Skills Competition at Honolulu Community College on Saturday.
The students, led by instructor Shannon Rowe, will be representing Maui High School and the state this summer in the national finals at Ford World Headquarters in Michigan.
They will be competing for a share of some $12 million in scholarships and prizes.
The other teams in order of finish were: second place, Joey Lee and Edgar Pollante (instructor Julio Bayez), Maui High; third place, Ravin Ah Puck and Josiah Miguel (instructor Jay Ramos), Maui’s Lahainaluna High; fourth place, Shane Fernandez and Justin Jose (instructor Matt Doty), Maui’s King Kekaulike High; fifth place, Noah Borling and Troy Evans (instructor Petar Kovacic), King Kekaulike High; and sixth place, Dylan Kawada and Brandon Kobayashi (instructor Curtiss Hinden), Oahu’s Mililani High.
This was the first time that Mililani High had participated in the competition. The contest is perennially won by a team from Maui.
Maui High teams have placed in the top 10 in the competition for the past decade, and won national titles in 1995 and 2000.
While a student, Rowe and his teammate took second place in the national competition in 1996.
