Parking no longer will be free at the Nuuanu Pali and the Big Island’s Akaka Falls state park, in addition to Diamond Head crater.

However, parking will still be free at the city’s parking lot at the Honolulu Zoo for about a week while officials search for a new vendor to collect fees.

Diamond Parking Services will begin operating and collecting entrance and parking fees beginning Saturday at the Nuuanu Pali State Wayside and Akaka Falls State Park under an interim permit agreement with the Department of Land and Natural Resources.

Pro Park, Inc. began collecting parking fees at the Diamond Head State Monument Wednesday. Pro Park had previously managed the parking lot at Diamond Head until unmanned parking fee stations were installed.

Parking had been free for a week at the three state facilities and the Honolulu Zoo when the company that operated solar-powered, unmanned parking kiosks at those lots went bankrupt.

City Department of Enterprise Services Director-designate Guy Kaulukukui said proposals are being accepted until noon Friday for a new company to collect parking fees at the Honolulu Zoo lot.

The city will evaluate the proposals over the weekend and select a new parking lot vendor at the zoo Monday with the intention of collecting fees at the end of next week, Kaulukukui said.

The state agreement provides for both parking control and fee collection for commercial tour operators and non-residents. Residents do not have to pay fees.
