The gates and fence around Iolani Palace are being replaced.

Efforts to repair and restore the ironwork fence and walls surrounding Iolani Palace are underway.

The state Department of Land and Natural Resources says the palace and grounds will remain open during the work. Some entrances and sidewalks will be temporarily closed as work is done in those areas.

The $1.5 million project is expected to be completed next year.

Gates at multiple entrances and the iron fence and brick wall enclosing the royal tomb site are also part of the renovation project.

The ironwork fence was installed in 1892.

Iolani Palace, its grounds, fence and royal tomb site were designated a National Historic Landmark in 1962 and listed in the National Register of Historic Places in 1978.
