An Oahu grand jury returned an indictment Tuesday, charging a 25-year-old woman with causing the death of a pedestrian in 2013.
The indictment charged Stacey Selzer with negligent homicide in last year’s death of 90-year-old Takashi Kunihiro. Selzer’s bail is $11,000.
Honolulu police said Selzer was behind the wheel of a car that struck Kunihiro on Dec. 28, 2013. They said Kunihiro was crossing Hunakai Street in a crosswalk when Selzer made a left turn from Kilauea Avenue onto Hunakai Street, striking Kunihiro.
Hunakai Street and Kilauea Avenue intersect twice; this was the makai intersection.
Deputy Prosecutor Chastity Imamura told a state judge Tuesday that police administered a field sobriety test with mixed results. When they used a Breathalyzer, Selzer’s blood-alcohol content measured 0.112 three hours after the accident.
The legal threshold for drunken driving is 0.08.
The accident happened just before 5 a.m., about two hours before sunrise.
Kunihiro was taken to the hospital by ambulance in critical condition. He sued Selzer in state court last September for his mounting medical expenses and other damages. Kunihiro died Oct. 1 from multiple complications from blunt-force injuries to his head, torso and extremities, the Honolulu Medical Examiner’s Office said.
Imamura said Selzer was a student at a school on the mainland at the time of the collision but was in Hawaii visiting family.
