Firefighters battle 3 brush fires on Kauai

Kauai County and state firefighters battled three separate brush fires in Kokee on Monday.

All three fires started at about 1:30 p.m. off Waimea Canyon Drive, near mile marker 3, according to an e-mailed statement from county spokeswoman Sarah Blane. Firefighters from the Kauai Fire Department and the Division of Forestry and Wildlife responded to the fire.

No damage or threat to structures was reported, said Blane. The  size of the fires was not available.

She said the brush fires are near containment but will likely continue to smolder in affected remote areas in the coming days.

“The cause of today’s fires has not yet been determined, however, it is unusual for three separate fires to occur simultaneously in the same area,” said Blane .

The Fire Department’s Air One helicopter and another helicopter contracted by the Department of Land and Natural Resources are assisting ground crews. A lessee of the state-owned property also provided a water tanker, bulldozer and payloader to assist firefighters.

Police have closed Waimea Canyon Drive until further notice. Traffic is being diverted to Kokee Road.
